Feathery Friday: Black Skimmers

Black Skimmers are most often thought of as an east coast bird, but at some point a population of them ended up on the west coast and have established themselves, with breeding groups both in Northern and Southern California. They hunt fish by skimming the surface of the water and dipping their huge lower beak down to capture the fish near the surface. They are fascinating birds to watch if you get a chance (in Silicon Valley, they breed on the island in Shoreline Lake in Mountain View).
