ABA Community: A Resource for all birders

The American Birding Association has just announced the opening of their new Community. You need to be an ABA member to sign up, but I’ve said before that I think the ABA is a good organization for birders to be a part of (and I recommend their weekly podcast as a nice way to hear what’s going on around the birding world), but the new community looks like it’s going to be a nice resource to connect with and interact with other birders around North America.

For those of you who’s kicked Facebook to the curb, this gives you a nice way to get access to the ABA Rare Bird Alerts, and it has both general discussion and “what is this bird?” areas.

This is a place where I expect to hang out on a regular basis, and you can find and connect with me here. I have just started a group in it for Bird Photographers, and we’ll see what happens.

I’ve been wanting to see a community like this created for a while — I suggested something like this to Audubon California a while back which went nowhere, unfortunately, and I keep hoping to find a way to organize something like it for Washington at some point — and I’m really thrilled to see the ABA step up and commit to supporting a community like this. I think it’s great for the entire birding community, and I am looking forward to seeing how it matures.
