Mom, Rest in Peace

My mom passed away tonight about 9PM, age not-quite-92, ending a long fight against cancer. A breast cancer survivor almost a decade ago, the cancer had returned into the bones and elsewhere, and when I got the phone call Thursday, I had a feeling it was probably That Call. After consulting with the doctors we were arranging to bring her home in hospice when she declined rapidly and ended up passing this evening.I'm incredibly sad to have lost her, she was a good friend as well as my mother, and my moral compass through the years. I am, however, quite happy to know her fight with the pain is over and that the suffering is done. She was alert and living alone and independent to the end, with some assistance and help.Mom, I will truly miss you, but I'm happy that you were able to live the life you wanted. Thank you for everything.

I'm here in Orange County for now as I'm now dealing with the estate, and I hope to get home as soon as I understand the plan for all that implies, but I do think I'll be commuting between here and home for the next few months. Right now, it's about making sure people know and getting the legal things going. Whee.I admit this isn't a huge surprise, I've been expecting That Phone Call for a while now, the only unknown was the timing. It was somewhat fortunate I was in San Diego at the time so I didn't ahve delays getting here adn was able to spend some time with her while she was still able to recognize us; once the Morphine kicked in hard, it was more about keeping her comfortable. I'll have more to talk about this topic some time later, I think. The house is amazingly empty and quiet now. This will take getting used to.
